Pull Apart Knots

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all purpose flour

  • 2 tsp active dry yeast

  • 2 tbsp sugar

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 3/4 cup milk or a combination of 1/2 cup milk +1/4 cup water

  • 2 tbsp butter + 1 tbsp melted butter for brushing on top of knots

  • sesame seeds for tops of knots, optional

  1. In a small saucepan, heat milk, water and 2 tablespoons butter on low heat until butter is melted and liquid has reached about 110°F to 120°F.

  2. Add flour, yeast, sugar and salt to the bowl of an electric mixer. Mix on low to combine ingredients.

  3. Slowly add milk mixture to flour mixture until all liquid has been incorporated.

  4. Increase speed to medium and knead dough for three to four minutes.

  5. Place dough on a floured surface and knead to form a smooth ball.

  6. Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover with oiled plastic wrap and let rise for 30 minutes.

  7. Gently punch dough down. Flatten into a rectangle and divide dough into 12 equal portions.

  8. Roll each portion into a 4-inch rope. Tie into a single knot and fold down the hanging parts sealing them at the bottom. Continue to do this until you have 12 knots.

  9. Place knots into a greased round cake tin. Cover with plastic wrap and allow to rice for 20 to 30 minutes.

  10. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle sesame seeds on top, if using.

  11. Bake in a preheated 425°F oven for 20 minutes, until tops are golden.

Notes&Tips:

  • I always make round dinner rolls as they are easy to form. But I wanted to up my game and these ended up as perfect "knots". Everyone enjoyed the unconventional rolls.

  • The most time consuming part of making these, is tying the knots. Get your little helpers in the kitchen and they will enjoy tying the knots for you. These do not have to be perfect.

  • The rolls were soft and had a melt in your mouth feel when eaten. One is not enough!
